Scanning 3d objects is a very powerful tool we can use to explore the past. With 3D objects we can experience many things that would not be possible. For example we could use scanning to see objects which are otherwise too delate for people to handle. We can rebuild cities and ancient sites to experience places that have been destroyed. Or we can take tours of historic buildings without leaving the comfor of our own home. The possibilities of a virtual world can bring us many advancements to how we study the past possibly even bringing it into the present.

I think that depending on how they are presented they could be a valuable medium to history. The problem with history video games that are currently popular is that they alter aspects of reality to make the game more entertaining. That being said they still may have aspects which are historically accurate, but to an untrained eye it may be difficult to separate the accurate from the fabricated. This presents another issue which has already occurred in other forms of entertainment such as television in which the viewer may gain a false sense of reality from the information presented to them. All this taken into account I believe that there is a place for digitally interactive forms of history, but it should not be left to the end user to interpret the fiction from reality.

I agree with this. The internet is increasingly becoming more integeral to our daily lives in new ways. It has the ability to bring so many people together. I noticed this change the other day on the YouTube app for my phone. It now allows for content creators to make posts without having to upload a video as is normal on a platform like Twitter. Creating this space in which people can discuss something they have a mutual interest in seems to be a big selling point to sites these days.

In terms of how I view Wikipedia not really. Personally it did not change my point of view or how i will use it. I however did learn something new about having a account for wikipedia and the courses available. I was not aware that such extensive training was provided. This i beleive is a good thing as it gives people the information they need to properly contribute to Wikipedia.

Neutral point of view policies have many benefits especially in environments such as Wikipedia. They allow the information of sensitive topics to be displayed factually without bias. This is important because it allows the reader to draw their own conclusions. It can also hinder the content if some information is intended to be presented in a way that’s violates the policy.

I agree, typically the use of digital technology puts more emphasis on the end user, requiring them to do more work as the tools they need are available for them to do so. Prior to digitization certain tasks may have required outsourcing due to the process required to gain the finished product. Working with digital technologies makes the process more efficient requiring less people, but requires just as much work. The same requirements for a successful research project stays the same, but the way the project is presented, digital or not changes.

In a search engine for historians good keyword searching is important. When doing research finding information for our topics can be difficult if we are unable to search for documents with a keyword surrounding our work.

Another feature in a search engine that would be useful for historians would be searching with context. Sometimes when searching a keyword you don’t want everything to do with that keyword. Having the search engine know in what context the word is used would be helpful.

Metadata is the data within a document that allows computers to make sense and categorize it. I can consist of abstracts, key words and catalogue numbers. It is important to digital documents because it allows us to find them with search engines as well as understand the document without carefully viewing the information ourselves.

archivists don’t digitize everything for various reasons. These reasons have to do with various categories of criteria. examples of these criteria is are volume of the information, size and size of the documents, copying does not produce an exact replica, quality of the copy, maintenance of the digital copy. All these things go into to the preservation of a document, which require a vast amount of time and resources. Because of this archivists much pick and choose what is important enough to focus these resources on.

Podcasting has impacted the way we consume content on the internet. It’s direct impacts to history revolve around authenticity and proper permission of content used from a scholarly perspective. This uses for education is quite immense. Podcasts allow for more flexible ways of providing a series of lectures on a topic. In terms of public history podcasting is great because it is free. This allows for anyone one to use it, which makes it the perfect way for people to create works which may otherwise left unexplored.

This is a site which I refer to from time to time. It displays a calendar of all current and upcoming video game releases. The main page displays all the titles and you can click on a title to view more information about it. In the information section you can read an abstract and watch any posted trailers for the game as well as view information pertaining to its release, and supported platforms. The site offers a very clean netflix like style navigations presenting the information in a quick and efficient way.

I think that the design of the website is crucial to the use of the site. if people are not able to use the site they won’t get the information they need from it. another important point is the maintenance of the site. Is the info up to date, do all the functions work? these are things that are important to the site.

I have always been interested in technology, it’s advancements, and it’s impacts. Having developed a passion for history throughout my academic career seeing these two topics presented in a course seemed too good to be true. I am interested to learn more about how technology can impact the field of history. I hope to gain a better understanding of how these new technologies can aid in my research as well as the future research of others.
